Beotys is a French restaurant specialising in Greek dishes, or perhaps a Greek restaurant with some French dishes. Now the reason for my confusion is that they started life as a French restaurant, well over 60 years ago, and now serve an incredible array of mostly Greek dishes. Having said that, the surviving French dishes are delicious, especially the veal flambes, which was cooked right at our table. Although the flambes was the highlight of my meal, the array of seafood on offer, and of course a moussaki, were sampled and thoroughly enjoyed as well. Something that was pleasant to add to the good food was the ample wine menu, which wont have your wallet wincing.
The restaurant is in central London, just five minutes walk from Leicester Square Tube station, so it's perfect for those pre or post theatre meals, and they even have a tasty and reasonably priced fixed meal option, £15. Speaking of the prices, they're very reasonable, especially considdering the quality of food and exceptional, attentive yet unintrusive, service. You can expect to have two mains and a bottle of wine for around £55.
The atmosphere is quite formal with the lack of music and conversation can be difficult if it's not full, having said that, the lack of piped music is quite refreshing. The chairs are comfortable and the restaurant is pleasant on the eyes, if slightly dated in style.
Overall I enjoyed our meal there, the food was great, the service even better and the host, Michael Fargos, was genuinely entertaining. If your looking for a slightly more upmarket place to eat before a play, or one that wont break the bank, Beotys will fit the bill nicely.
