Frequently Asked Questions

Although let's be honest there haven't been many questions recently, so it's FEQ, Frequently Expected Questions.

Ask any questions you have below in the comments and if they are repeated / good I'll put them in the page.

Why don't you have (insert artist, album venue or event)?

We're new, and really the idea is that you are more than welcome to add it.

This will be a central tenant, we hope to be told when wrong, or incomplete and stand to be corrected

Are you concerned about allowing that level of freedom of input?

Wikipedia works alright and you can modify that without even logging in. We've got a number of existing safety guards, from reporting false deliberately malicious listings/edits (which will result in automatic suspensions and rollbacks / deleting of records), to locking a record to further edits and a degree of machine learning checking for a few things (loathe to call everything AI, but that's another conversation).

OK so I can't easily see where to or add something, where do I do this?

Ah, yas. fairplay. If you click the logo. Manage Item You'll get a popup that's relatively self explanatory.

Was this all built by one guy?

Not really, apart from some UCT students (happy to shout them out if they're about) building the baseline many years ago (.net VB 2.0 for the geeks), a few false starts trying to outsource, some of which has been partially usable, there are a number of significant opensource plugins from the forum, YAF, to the maps, to the UI components. Having said this, Mac has brought everything onto modern standards and expanded the use cases significantly (with the help of Dave (Chatgpt) and Claude).

Why Dave?

Because it's always Dave. And, everyone's got a mate called Dave. Dangerous Dave, if you're lucky. Because Trigger!

And there was a lot of this:

Literally:

Receive response: What the hell Dave?

Ask for an update with detailed instructions and it ends up worse: DAVE!

There's been a lot of that, but, truthfully, overall, the AI have been invaluable, kinda like working with a super enthusiastic idiot sevant.

What are you trying to achieve?

On the noble side, trying to help a few clubs, restaurants and other venues survive and thrive, a few artists and bands break through. It's about getting people out and about, interacting and having fun. Ah, yes having fun is one thing to be achieved, and of course making a bit of money, enough to pay some bills and hire an employee or two to swear at Dave.

I like what you're doing, how can I help?

For now, you can help by adding whatever you notice missing, and enjoying the site.

I was more alluding to saying I can write and would like to write for you. Can I do that?

We're always looking for talented writers, unfortunately see the making money to pay people. Of course there are perks, and if you are happy to write for perks and the promise of something more one day let's talk more:

In the mean time, adding detailed ratings of the kind of reviews you'd like to do, and sharing a few article ideas internally will always help, as is a colourful turn of phrase within the wider site in comments or on the forums. Wordsmith is not a colourful turn of phrase. If that is the only place it's ever used on the site I will be a happy man.

Ok. Wait. So you mentioned suspensions; what are the rules?

Clearly this is all going to need to be laid out bit by bit at some stage, but in looking to build a community where you are judged on your contribution regardless of race, creed, nationality or gender means that we'll try abide by the general rule of: "don't be a dick" that works well through so much of society. So sure, there's freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean freedom from consequences. There will be limits as to what everyone is willing to put up with. Having said that we are strictly Apolitical. That means that there are no political discussions, memes news or anything else allowed unless they directly impact the industries or people within the entertainment industry. Oh, no under 18s.

So where is the site going?

Having said one of our slogans is: For the fans, by the fans, it's going to be strongly influenced by what you want to see. So take a look at this poll and this forum. There are some parts that are further developed than others, and some that are more important what you say will have significant influence. It may have grown slightly out of hand, and there is a lot more to come. I blame the ADHD/delay induced perfectionism.

Is that a bug or a feature?

Above is discussing features a bug is different, it's an obvious error, something that doesn't work at all or does the wrong thing (or shock, horror, causes a crash). You can report bugs here: Bugs they'll be number one priority.

Is it true that you said: "I don't care if the icons lineup, when the driver steps on the gas I want him to shit his pants."?

No, Enzo Ferrari said: "I don't care if the door gaps are straight. When the driver steps on the gas I want him to shit his pants." I said: "I don't care if the icons lineup. When the user clicks the button, I want him to shit his pants." It's a long winded way of saying that I know about a few minor layout issues, probably major to other people but they are considered lower level bugs that can be lived with for now. For example having spent half a day trying to change the colour of the rating tab stars, they're in the catch up later bucket. So yeah some of those errors make me twitch from both not being right and reflexive carpal tunnel from smashing buttons looking for a solution. Let me know what you suggest within the bug section and the more people agree / also twitch when they see it, the sooner I'll look at them.

Why should I register as the owner / contact of a company?

As the code develops, you will have a lot more control over the management of the records, single click rollsbacks and locking for example, access to a lot more sections and features, including stats, being able to receive messages for bookings and fan communication, and the ability to promote your venues/events/artists etc.

What makes this site special?

Apart from the depth and breadth, from the way that lineups are listed to group members and the detail over there for historical and current knowledge, there is the multi-genre. Ah, this article about genres might be interesting. This makes searching for what you are looking for that much easier, there's been some extensive work on the searching for events and venues that should allow people to find the exact kind of place they are looking for (see goals of getting people to see new artists and helping venues and events, I mean if we help take a half full live gig at the local pub to swinging from the rafters, that would be grand).
We allow events to be listed as weekly events which will automatically populate into the future.
0 ratings, we all know that there are sometimes that you don't even want to allow then a single star, and we respect that.

What are the restrictions to who can list / be listed?

From an artist point of view the rule is that you must have been paid to play a few gigs. It means that garage bands and bedroom DJs will have to wait until they've taken those first steps. Happy to help after, and will see what the future brings about being able to help at that stage.
